for those who are really tight on budget, dont need that 32Gb RAM. It would cost your soul. Just 16Gb is enuff

if u dont wanna think, any entry level gaming laptop is already good. But u have to carry around a whole 2kg laptop and a brick charger because the battery wont last long in back-to-back classes

My suggestion: any 11th gen or 12th gen cpu okay dyy — 16Gb RAM MUSTTT — space dont care — GPU dont really need (if ur not in AI). get a AMD ryzen cpu if u wanna nerd about performance efficiency. This spec will get u to FYP and end of degree (source: trust me bro)

u dont need a gaming laptop. can get a decent office laptop for easy mobility and long battery life

a bit correction, 12th is much more better than 11th. And u hardly find 11th gen anymore

Aslong the specs are good and condition it's fine. Just be careful with the sellers, check the other stuff too like wifi card etc, track pad, port condition.

Yes, i am computing infrastructure and i use a mac

unless you have a Mac, all gaming laptops will have severe battery drain, you usually get atleast 2-3 hours of continuous use without plugged in. And imense heat output.

there are students who have a Mac and windows... benefits of both worlds. But atleast macOS is pretty.

Me who is dailydriving Linux 🥲. Need a bit computer knowledge in order to use linux tho — running Fedora.

Is Intelligence Computing a scheduled pack? I mean, are the lectures/classes going to be from morning till evening?

It's not as packed as matriculation usually you will have lectures, tutorial and lab sessions. Certain days maybe hectic tho

lectures are fix but you can select your tutorial/lab slots, usually year 1 sem 1 it's fixed but sem 2 certain lecturers will allow you to choose the slots. So depending on luck you may have a day with only 1 class or no class.

Most courses usually have 2 midterm test, 2 assignments, maybe even a presentation — all these is 50% coursework mark and the other 50% is final exam.

How do we present the code

It's called a viva session. You and your group will have a 1 on 1 presentation with the lecturer, you have to explain your code and demo it live. Then in the last 10 minutes the lecturer may ask you to modify or fix something on the spot to see if you can do it.

Last time it was 3 people in a group. Most of us couldn't do the modification part but it's only 10% of the assignment so still can survive.

But sem1 will not involve the viva session so juz chill guyss

Yes manually. Only Times based programming and midterm test are computerized for coding.

you will also be required to download lockdown browser software to start the test and be physically present for online test.

Cs School has a student Lounge and a pantry with water filter too you can chill there in the AC too if you dont wanna go back to dorm

Not too crowded. Basically a chill place to hang in between classes.

Undergraduate student Lounge open on Weekdays unless further announcements 9am-5pm

erm cheaper than most places — Usm food is generally cheaper

The food inside use are generally cheaper than outside and they all except touch n go ewallet. Outside USM is KFC, mixue, nasi kandar pelita, McDonald C food court. Impossible to starve in USM haha.

USM have food bank. Restock everyday too.

A: Open pohon usm > check in desasiswa > bahagian wajib dicetak. Di situ ada pelekat yg boleh di print.

Q: mcm mana nk tau slip yuran tu dh keluar ke belum, and kena bayar yuran before lapor diri or macam mane?
A: yuran boleh dibayar sebelum tamat semester. Jadi don't worry you can enter first.

does anyone know the date to pay registration fee? i cant find the menu of fee right now

hi theres some people including me still not in the clear about our registration and orientation day.. can anyone help me with this

Basically based on the date & time you get to lapor diri, you should be at USM to register at your respective Desasiswa. Remember to bring your offer letter and photocopy of ic and other relevant documents.

There will be PPSL (pemimpin program siswa Lestari). They are your students facilitators/guides to help you during registration and prepare activities for you throughout the orientation week.

After registration at Desasiswa and you got your room key you can move in to your room. The same day you can still go out to buy stuff with your parents during the day of Registration but should be back to dorm by 5pm that day, after that you are not allowed to leave until orientation week ends. There will be ice breaking activities that night too at your respective Desasiswa conducted by the PPSL.

Throughout the week starting on 21/9 your PPSL will bring you all to DTSP (Dewan Tunku Syed Putra) USM largest hall for talks/sessions throughout the week. You have to wake up early 5-6am and it can last until 8-9pm or later (you do have a lunch/dinner break in between sessions).

One of the orientation days your PPSL will bring you to your respective schools eg. the school of computer sciences where you will meet the CS faculty and your academic advisors and introduction to the course.

One of the nights you will also have a jamuan, buffet dinner together with your respective Desasiswa too.

After orientation week ends, you are free to leave USM whenever you want. For those not wanting to stay at dorm you can checkout of desa by going into your respective Desasiswa offices and filling up a form.

Also after you register at desa, any information please refer to your PPSL too as every year have certain changes, these are just experience from last year ya.

Can bring some biscuits and a powerbank along with u too, since the talks are quite boring and you'll be sitting there for almost the whole day. u can even challenge yourself to sleep during the talks, your PPSL will help you take some nice pictures and you might even appear on the IG posts.

hi, i have to attend an interview in the morning on 21/9, how will the process be if i want to go out during orientation week

You can just inform PPSL directly about the interview, and they will bring you to Penggawa (basically head of desasiswa). They will then provide you with a form to fill in. Just make sure to bring some proof/evidence with you.

may I ask if we can bring motorcycle as a first year student? Do we need to get permission from any jk?

You can bring motorcycles/bicycles, aslong you don't park them at staff parking / by the road etc you won't be fine by the jabatan keselamatan. Only Cars are a bit hard and you will need to apply for a car sticker at USM jabatan keselamatan for a parking sticker and those are also limited.

Hand fan is allowed. But big fans are not allowed. But not the plug in one ya USB fan only

Depends on room and level, if your room window face east or west sunrise and sun set is very hot, especially those on the top floor even with curtains closed. At night usually the corridor is cooler than the room and it takes awhile for the room to be cooler.

it's really hot now actually you can try this — just wet a small cloth with water, squeeze it really well so no water drips into the fan motor or USB port, and hang it right in front of your clip fan. The air will feel much cooler, like a mini aircond.

You can wear casual clothes, plain tshirt (no need collar) and long pants to class with covered shoes (sport shoes, sneakers etc). You only need to wear formal attire during presentations. Just do not wear sleeveless, shorts and you will be fine.

do we need to use laptop cooler/laptop stand during the class?

Nope, it's also not really advisable as the lecture tables are pretty small and a cooler would be quite bulky. For labs and tutorials the a/c is cool enough. you can keep the laptop cooler/stand in your room.

if I want to use laptop in the lecture hall is quite difficult... but there is no socket right?

my 16in laptop covers the whole table but still usable haha. That's why most students use tablets instead but laptops are still fine, just hold onto the folding table so it doesn't fall forward. There are a few [sockets] on the edges for the wall but not enough for everyone.

did cs student use ipad/tab a lot? or more to laptop jee?

For lecture notes and tutorials many students use a tablet for convenience compared to paper to review the material, but for assignments and projects a laptop is very much essential. So an ipad or tablet can be considered optional — nice to have but not a must have.

do we need buku nota, if yes how much book is needed, also do we have lecture notes and tutorial books?

Most students use a laptop/tablets like ipads with apps like good notes/notability etc for lectures, tutorials and lab materials as they are uploaded online in the elearn platform — but note books are fine too. I recommend files with fasteners and foolscap paper so you can keep adding on and rearrange the pages.

Assignments are also mostly typed and usually submitted in pdf form. The times you will be forced to use pen and paper is during test and finals.

Is the market for Sc still high 👀

There are multiple pathways not just a coding monkey. Other jobs like software consultants exist too. Besides software developer, there's also software tester (you focus on finding bugs and reporting them), software consultant (the business and marketing side), can also become management too overseeing projects instead.

Or u can extend your unemployment and go for postgraduate studies🌚

You can do that get a PhD and you're a lecturer now haha
